Katakolon is the second largest port in all of Greece. The port was renovated and enlarged in 2003 to accomodate the many cruise ships that stop here enabling passengers to visit Olympia. The resulting financial boon to the town of Katakolon allowed the citizens to lovingly restore the old town while retaining its charm and friendliness. It's a nice place to spend a few hours.


Even with such a busy port, Katakolon remains a small village with a only three streets. Along the harbor one finds cafes, tavernas, and restaurants where many visitors sip something cool and enjoy the sea breezes. The next street in, "Main Street" is where you will find most of the shops. Some are touristy, some are quite nice. Haggling is expected for bigger ticket items. The back street is home to a local bakery and a couple of tavernas. It is easy to see all of Katakolon by foot in a short time. If you'd prefer to be driven around, there is a horse drawn carriage for two, and a horse drawn tram that holds several couples.
